View Full Version : What happened to defectors(to the USSR) when the Soviet Union collapsed?

I just finished a book where the main character defects to the Soviet Union after being found out as a spy...that was set back in the 70s...such defectors were looked after quite well, I believe, and I just wondered what happened to them when the USSR collapsed.....were they still looked after, or were they left to look after themselves?

As far as I know, the same thing happened to them after the fall of the Iron Curtain that happened to the defectors to the West: nothing.

From what I've heard, they're all (or mostly) still there and living normally.

Bygones are bygones.

Former East Germany is another thing. As far as I know, a number of those ex-spies and defectors have faced charges in Germany.
