I understand that a colour-colour chart e.g. (U-B) vs (B-V) can be used to identify the spectral type of a MS star, to estimate extinction and obtain a photometric parallax.

Does this technique also work with IR bands? In particular will we be able to obtain photometric parallaxes based on the results of the WISE mission using 3.4, 4.6, 12 & 22 micron bands?

For example, see Finlator et al., who show that
both optical and infrared colors allow us to pin
down the location of a star on the main sequence
(or, to a lesser extent, off it)
