    Why the LHC?

Why the LHC? The author, Roy, discusses the history of the search for unification with a summary of the successes and continued seaches for new paerticles. Sometimes, having an interest in particle physics is like searching through the sands of time in an archeological dig. You never know....

What was that a while ago about the Higgs Boson being such a vile particle that it's discovery/creation sent ripples back in time to try to prevent it from being discovered/created?

The biggest gains will likely come from engineers who design future undulators that will convert higher energy beamlines into higher energy X-rays necessary to view greater details than the beamlines of today can provide when looking into cancer cells and steel structures to see where they fracture prematurely. Disease cures and better in depth studies of the changes that take place when cancers enter host cells will likely come from better visions of the cellular world that greater energies provide. Bullet proof vests and fuels that don't exhaust carcinogens will come from such studies and existing beamlines have provided very good details but not enough to deal with things like Parkinsons and Alzheimer's and the many complex problems in the brain with its trillions of neurons within a spaghetti bowl of complexity that needs more resolution lower energies cannot provide.
