Odd shaped feature

This image at first glance looks like a large crater, but the shadow inside the depression is triangular, not parabolic. Does anyone know what this is?

I have tagged a great many features that I don't have a clue about. Didn't suspect that someone might want to discuss them.

Thinking back though, I would guess that most of the unknowns that I have tagged are giant craters only a portion of which show up in the image.

Hi JohnMcMillen,

It's hard to tell without being able to "zoom out" to get a better view of the surroundings, but this could be a large degraded crater. It could also be a degraded rough terrain, possibly formed by old impact ejecta.

Frank, both of those are "gigantic" craters (relative to the image slices you're looking at). They're also too large to identify in that image with the tools we give you because the centers are off the edge. But don't worry - most images in the database are at native resolution, but then we zoom out by 3x and have you look at the region again, and then zoom out by another 3x to look again.

lol ! Well, they did look like giants on my itty-bitty laptop screen.

I shall stop flagging them as unknown items. I just imagine the database is going to need an enema soon.

Which reminds me; I realize you folks are swamped with real science, and then you have a bunch of fumble-fingered amateurs (that'd be me) flagging things willy-nilly. Have you a plan to advise us not to flag silly stuff, and show us examples?

Why don't you start a thread of "Stuff I Flagged - Should I?" or your own title of intrigue. Then we can take a look and say, "No, that's just a big crater," or, "Woah! What the --- is that?!"
