Hey, this year, I don't need an excuse to avoid Graham's family Christmas! Generally, I spend the holiday alone in a corner with none of them talking to me, so spending it with my partner and children will be better, though Simon will miss his cousin.

I get the feeling a lot of people would quite like to be able to say, "We'd love to visit/invite you as usual, but, you know, Covid rules." But a lot of other people who really enjoy Christmas gatherings are making a lot of anguished emotional arguments on national television at present, accompanied by a smaller group who offer emotional arguments about religious observance.
That's fine, and there's nothing wrong with emotional arguments per se, but most of them seem to invoke the damaging false dichotomy of "safe" versus "unsafe". As in, "If we drive the numbers low enough, surely it will be safe to visit other people at Christmas."
All these appeals should be tempered with a cautionary chyron or footnote, bearing the words of the epidemiologist Neil Ferguson.Grant HutchisonIt risks some transmission and there will be consequences of that. Some people will die because of getting infected on that day.

Yesterday, a very strong cold front moved through our area. It had been predicted well in advance, appearing on weather radar as a sharp line of storms slowly moving east. I had some outdoor activity to do, so I was paying fairly close attention to its timing.
We also live fairly close to a substantial airport, and frequently hear planes flying over our house.
As we sat down to dinner, I heard a single-engine plane heading westward. Given the impending weather, I was a bit surprised, and called up its flight plan using an app on my phone.
Sure enough, it was heading to an airport about an hour away, but on the other side of the weather front.
We spent the next several minutes wondering if we were watching an upcoming episode of "Air Disasters" play out. Eventually, the pilot decided that flying through the storms wasn't a good idea and turned the plane back to its point of origin.
I didn't check, but presume the pilot completed the trip around an hour later, when the dangerous weather had passed.
I suspect the pilot thought he/she could beat the weather to their destination airport, but got delayed on the ground prior to departure.

Another poster figures he is worth 187.5 billion dollars. third poster decides the best thing to do is divide that among the whole world's population of 7 billion people. The third poster has determined that everyone would get 1 billion dollars each. The person keeps going on and on about how great this would be. Other posters have determined that 1 billion dollars each is not very good math, but the third poster keeps saying they are an engineer. In frustration, the initial poster now wants Elon Musk to invest a billion in education, STEM in particular.
So, this is how you guys feel when I do math?

This is amusing to me and a sign of the times. I saw a link to this - AARP now has some Atari arcade games, three available without membership. They seem like reasonable emulations too, though Missile Command has no sound. Asteroids is my favorite, but Centipede is decent too. I always liked those games, but wasn’t willing to spend all the quarters to get really good at them.

I saw something like this before, not quite as bad, but bad. I suspect some people don't think of a "billion" as an actual number. They just understand it to mean something very large and they don't know how to deal with it mathematically.

In some places, a billion is 10^12 rather than 10^9. That helps a little.

This post bugs me.
Both numbers are given as "billion", so changing the definition of "billion" shouldn't change the math. But you're only changing the definition for one "billion", but not the other one.
What bugs me about that is that it makes sense to do it.
