Dim the lights on Broadway - goodbye to Stephen Sondheim aged 91.

Age 91 is not a bad innings but apparently his death was "sudden". To quote the NY Times "Mr. Sondheim was the theater’s most revered and influential composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century, if not its most popular." From the bawdy and often frivolous "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” to "Assassins".

When you think of some of his creations - the lyrics for "West Side Story", music and lyrics for "Sweeney Todd". His engagement with pointillism in "Sunday in the Park with George" etc. The list goes on and on.

And perhaps his most 'popular' song performed not by a singer of note but by a great actor who can bring the lyrics to the fore.

I had already covered him for the column, but he's meant so much to me for so long that I did an obituary anyway.
