I was in Middle School when my family first got cable television. A few years HBO was added to the line-up; the original HBO pre-movie intro sequence had dramatic music accompanying a POV going down a street at sundown, and tiny lights coming on in the houses. Nowadays that precious air time would be jammed with commercials.

I still remember the introduction to great fanfare of a brand new channel called "Music Television" or MTV for short. I watched terribly unhip news anchors struggling to explain just what a "music video" was. I even saw the very first MTV video air.

I remember not having cable because there was no such thing. I remember our first color television set. I remember when car ignitions needed regular ignition points replacement.

I remember when MTV actually played music videos, with occasional 'VJ' appearances.

I grew up when the only thing being sold in the streets in front of your house was the high school band's candy bars and lightbulbs. When entertainment was drive-in theaters not drive-by shootings.

I predate the discovery of DNA. Joseph Stalin and James Dean were still alive when I was born. No one had run a 4 minute mile. LEGOs had not been invented.

I'm rather surprised to realize that's true for me as well. Although Clinton and GW Bush didn't miss it by much.

I love how one can make things sound much older or longer ago than they really are. For example:

The first car my son drove in, was the car his great-grandmother bought new. (that car is only 16 years old, not a Ford T)

I remember when a computer game of less than 1 MB cost an awful lot of money in a currency that no longer exists (that's also about 16 years ago)

I remember John Glenn's launch... On the Space Shuttle Discovery.
I remember the eruption of Mount St. Helens... The 2004 eruption, that is.
"Dancing Queen" always makes me nostalgic for elementary school... When the A-Teens debuted their cover version.

I should introduce my niece to this thread. She's the king of "I am so old". I'll illustrate.

When not being allowed to go out, her reply was "but next year I'll turn 16!" A little bit of math later, this means that she's 14 at the moment. (still has to turn 15 this year, so next year she'll turn 16). But obviously "but I'm 14!" was not a good argument to be allowed to go out.

I am so old I have never turned on a radio and said "Why are they playing all the CSI theme songs?" But I do know someone young who did.
