Phases of the Moon Playing Cards

Help launch a new resource for astronomy outreach and education.

Award winning nature guidebook author Jonathan Poppele has just completed his latest project—a beautiful deck of playing cards that illustrates the phases of the moon. He is seeking backing on Kickstarter to put the deck into production. The project closes on Sunday, August 24, 2014. Here is a link to the Kickstarter project page:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...11/moon-cards/

Designed to be fun and attractive for the user, these cards are built on a foundation of good science and cleaver pedagogy. The rich information on the cards is designed to be passively absorbed. By simply engaging in their favorite games, players become familiar with the prominent features on the moon while building an intuitive understanding of the connection between the moon's phase, age, and orbital position.

The clever layout of the deck makes it easy for players to absorb the information without effort: Red cards show the waxing moon while black cards show the waning moon. The rank of the card corresponds with the age moon—the 9 of hearts shows the 9 day old waxing gibbous while the 6 of spades shows the 22 ˝ day old waning crescent, 6 days before the next new moon. A small inset shows the position of the moon in its orbit around the earth. The deck shows two lunations, one culminating in a perigee full moon and the other in an apogee full moon, giving a clear illustration of the variation in the apparent size of the moon and the timing of the first and third quarters.

Jonathan's work is dedicated to both science education and to helping people connect more deeply to the natural world around them. As he says, “getting to know the phases of the moon is a great way to feel connected to the rhythms of nature. I designed these cards to help us experience the changing face of our Earth's natural satellite, just by playing our favorite games. Becoming familiar with the moon is like gaining a lifelong friend—a friend who will come and visit every month, no matter where in the world you are.”
