    Events explaining China's aerospace development, including an exhibition of lunar soil brought back by the Chang'e-5 lunar probe from its epic trip last December, are expected to be put on show in Hong Kong this week. The event will boost locals' patriotic sentiment and spur Hong Kong researchers to become involved in the country's scientific advance, local university professors told the Global Times on Monday.

    Samples of the lunar soil that were retrieved from China's first extraterrestrial sample-collecting mission were due to arrive in Hong Kong on Monday, local media hk01.com reported, and they will be put on display at an exhibition center from June 27 until July. A smaller version of the Chang'e-5 lunar probe prototype will also be shown to the public.

    China has started building a monitoring station as part of a network to study space weather, according to China's National Space Science Center (NSSC).

    The NSSC, which is affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the station is being built in Siziwang Banner, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Spread over 400 mu (about 26.67 hectares), it is expected to be completed in 2023.

    The station will use large-scale high-frequency radar array as the main detection equipment, and integrate various detection means such as radio radar, active and passive optics, cosmic rays and geomagnetic field.

It has accomplished the highest degree of precision in space laser interferometry so far in China.

    China has successfully tested technology that can control the landing sites of falling rocket fairings, according to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT).

    CALVT said the test was carried out following a Long March-2C rocket launch on Monday morning.

    The test solved the problem of the structural disintegration of fairings during reentry. It was the first time China landed a fairing using a parachute, laying a solid foundation for future accurately controlled landings of rocket fairings, CALVT said.

    Four satellites have been deployed to support rescue and relief efforts in Henan by monitoring the affected areas and providing reliable data after rainstorms lashed the region, according to the Xi'an Satellite Control Center.

    The satellites, mainly used for earth observation and remote sensing imaging, were deployed to assist relevant departments in analyzing and assessing the rainstorm situation and enable satellite users to receive the remote sensing images of the affected areas in a timely manner.

    The center has also rescheduled the tasks of remote sensing and meteorological satellites including Gaofen and Fengyun satellites, and sent hundreds of application instructions to ensure the satellites provide fast and accurate remote sensing image information and meteorological data services.

    Chinese scientists are contributing their wisdom to global and national efforts to slow down climate change, as they have recently compiled China's first global carbon flux dataset based on high-quality data collected by the country's first carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring satellite, the Global Times learned from the project leader on Monday.

    The breakthrough means that China has become the third country with the ability to quantitatively monitor the global carbon budget from space. The satellite, commonly known as TanSat, has proven it can perform the task as brilliantly as those from Japan and the US, Yang Dongxu, a fellow researcher with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and also the chief scientist of the project, told the Global Times on Monday.

    A sea of white lotus, grown from space-bred seeds, is blooming under early autumn sunshine in fields of Guangchang County, east China's Jiangxi Province, promising a bumper harvest for local farmers.

    Guangchang has sent lotus seeds to the space for six times and developed a series of space lotus strains.

    "Space breeding has become one of the methods of agricultural breeding that combines techniques of aerospace, biology and agriculture," said Yang Liangbo, head of the white lotus research institute in Guangchang. "Seeds can be nurtured into new strains after they go through genetic mutations in space."

    He said the space-bred lotus strains are welcomed by growers as they have higher yield, better quality and longer flowering season, compared with traditional varieties.

    Guangchang has developed 110,000 mu (7,333 hectares) of space-bred lotus ponds, yielding 9,000 tonnes of lotus seeds a year.

    China has initiated a project of building a constellation of 36 low-orbit satellites to gather information for forecasting natural disasters and monitoring urban emergencies.

    The project undertaken by the Tianjin Satcom Geohe Technologies Co., Ltd. was inaugurated on Tuesday in China's spacecraft launch center of Wenchang, in south China's Hainan Province.

    Guo Jianqiang, president of the tech firm based in north China's Tianjin Municipality, said the first satellite will be launched and commissioned in space in June 2022. All 36 satellites will have been launched by the end of May in 2023 to complete the constellation.

    China is looking at ways of expanding its space exploration capabilities including through a vehicle similar in appearance to NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter.

    A prototype of “Mars surface cruise drone” passed a final acceptance review Aug. 20, the National Space Science Center (NSSC) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced Wednesday.

    The rotorcraft was one of three projects in a technology cultivation program promoted by the NSSC. The vehicle project was led by Bian Chunjiang of the NSSC and features a micro spectrometer.
