Number of launches in 2019

Last year at this time, I set a target of 120 to 150 launches. We ended with 114. For this year, I expect the total number of launches to be in the range 130 to 160. Again it is a the small rocket taking off that will produce the higher number.

This year it is China that has started the ball rolling.

Iranian officials said on Tuesday that a satellite launch that had been condemned by the Trump administration failed when the carrier rocket could not reach orbit.

“I would have liked to make you happy with some good news, but sometimes life does not go as expected,” Iran’s minister of telecommunications, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, said in a Twitter post.

He said the rocket, a Safir, long used for satellite launches, had failed in the final stage, falling short of placing its payload into the correct orbit. He did not offer any explanation.

United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV Heavy rocket launched Saturday with the mysterious NROL-71 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office from SLC-6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. A series of technical and weather-related scrubs hampered the launch attempts, prior to a lengthy stand down to fix a hydrogen leak that scrubbed the final attempt of 2017 with just seconds remaining in the count. With the issue fixed, the launch was realigned for January 19, with the window opening at 11:05 AM local time (19:05 UTC). Launch occurred slightly into the window at 11:10 AM local time.

I was just thinking, with upcoming space faring nations, it might be more interesting to look at reliability over time per country rather than in total to see trends. And even then, the number of failures compared to the total number per year might be too small to really make statistically significant conclusions. That said, I do have the idea that reliability of the main space powers is steadily improving.

You are correct on the number of failures. There were only two failures last year. One by China and another by Russia.

It begins...expect SpaceX's launch count to balloon, quickly.

SpaceX has filed for FCC licenses in support of a Falcon 9 B5 launch from SLC-40, with recovery on ASDS Of Course I Still Love You about 600km to the NE.

NASASpaceFlight.com reports this is the first StarLink deployment launch.

800 satellites to begin service, and a total of 4,425 satellites to fill out the LEO phase. Add another 7,518 satellites for the VLEO phase.

For the first time in 2019, humans launched to space aboard Roscosmos’ veteran Soyuz-FG rocket and the Soyuz MS crew vehicle. The mission, Soyuz MS-12, is ferrying three crewmembers, one Russian and two Americans, to the International Space Station.

Aleksey Ovchinin and Nick Hague are two of the crew, and both strapped back into a Soyuz just six months after they were involved in the Soyuz MS-10 In-Flight Abort on 11 October 2018. They are joined on Soyuz MS-12 by NASA astronaut Christina Koch.

Liftoff occurred at 15:14:09 EDT (1914:09 UTC) on 14 March 2019 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Soyuz MS-12 will rendezvous and dock with the Station six hours later.

Italy’s PRISMA Earth observation satellite launched aboard Arianespace’s Vega rocket Thursday. Vega lifted off from its launch pad at the Centre Spatial Guyanais in Kourou, French Guiana, at 22:50:35 local time (01:50 UTC on Friday).
PRISMA, or Precursore Iperspettrale della Missione Applicativa, is a small hyperspectral imaging satellite that has been constructed by OHB Italia and will be operated by the Italian Space Agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). The satellite, whose name translates into English as “hyperspectral precursor of the application mission”, is intended to demonstrate the small satellite platform and its imaging payload, while also performing imaging that is useful in its own right.

The second orbital launch attempt for a private Chinese company has failed. OneSpace Tech’s OS-M Chongqing launch vehicle was attempting to orbit the small Lingque-1B technology demonstration satellite from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The launch took place at 09:32 UTC but failed shortly after entering second stage flight.

Rocket Lab is aiming for a rapid launch cadence in 2019, and begun that campaign with the first Electron launch of the year. The window to launch the R3D2 mission for DARPA was to open on Sunday at 22:30 UTC for four hours. However, a scrub was called for at least 48 hours due to a “video transmitter 13dB down with low performance” – while forecasted high winds moved the launch two days to the right, to Thursday. That attempt proved successful with an ontime launch.

The spacecraft are heading to a constellation that is already populated by 16 of the birds controlled by O3b Networks. SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket has conducted its second flight on Thursday, carrying its first customer payload – the Arabsat-6A communications satellite into space. Following a delay on Wednesday due to unacceptable Upper Level winds, Falcon Heavy lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center at the start of a one hour, 57-minute window that opened at 18:35 Eastern Time (22:35 UTC), taking a little over 34 minutes to deploy its payload into geosynchronous transfer orbit.

There should be a few more launches from the US this month as April has the best weather for launches in Florida, historically.
