No - HAL killed the hibernating scientists while Dave was out trying to resuce Frank and couldn't interfere.

I still think it's pretty serious when a computer who controls your life support starts making elementary mistakes. And the fault he mistakenly detected was in a piece of equipment nearly as important - the ship's link with Earth.
