We have threads about that, but the short answer is that we cannot know. Things may have existed before the expansion, or things may have begun to exist at the expansion. There are papers giving more detailed speculation, but they all boil down to that. Once we know more about what the String Theory hopes to cover, we might be able to say more, but don't hold your breath, it may take centuries to work out.
