New Sister Visits Alaska (video added)

The Wife had an exciting time during the last few days: her newfound (half) sister came up last Wednesday for their first in-person meeting and stayed with us for a few days. After an emotional greeting at the airport we took her to lunch, got her settled in at the house, then made a short trip to Hatcher Pass, about 35 miles away in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The forecast called for clouds and some rain all day but the afternoon cleared a bit and just in time. Kari said that her preconceptions of Alaska didn't prepare her for it being so green.

Just your ordinary, everyday scenic overlook

While I worked from home on Thursday, they spent time together in town then picked me up for a pleasant dinner at a new downtown restaurant. If you ever have a chance to sample duck confit tacos, I recommend them enthusiastically.

Now before this all came to be, The Wife and I had already planned a short trip to Homer for the prior weekend but after getting Kari's call, it was a no-brainer to reschedule and take her to one of our favorite getaway spots.

A view from Skyline Drive, showing the Homer Spit extending more than halfway across Kachemak Bay.

After a couple of days of food sightseeing, we left Homer Sunday morning and decided to make a detour to Seward and the Alaska Sealife Center.
