    Vacuum birefringence

    Regarding vacuum birefringence, using a strong magnetic field:

    But applied on particles / antiparticles popping into existence from the quantum "soup".

    Does that mean that we can create particles and extract them out of nothing?

    Well, you need to provide the energy (virtual particles can "borrow" their energy briefly, but to promote them to real particles, you need to provide real energy). And of course you still need to observe all the other conservation rules (charge, lepton number, and so forth), so they end up being created in particle-antiparticle pairs. So I guess the answer depends on whether you consider providing sufficient energy to be creating particles out of"nothing".
    Conserve energy. Commute with the Hamiltonian.
