    Pruning of BABBling this weekend

    Folks-

Every message on this board is stored in a database. Currently, that database is one gigabyte (yes, 1Gb) in size, and growing rapidly. I am almost out of room on my webhosting service, and it's squeezing out the main site.

The majority of this diskspace appears to be occupied by the BABBling forum. As a first step in remedying this, I will be pruning the forum this weekend. What that means is that every thread that has not been active for the past six months will be deleted off the server.

I don't like to do things like this, but I have no choice (other than to double my hosting fees by upgrading to a dedicated server, which I am unwilling to do right now).

This is important: PLEASE DO NOT BUMP OLD THREADS YOU DON'T WANT DELETED. The purpose of this is to save room on the disk. I will go through threads I have seen bumped and delete them anyway.

    Thanks,

    Phil

Sounds good to me. I didn't think you needed threads from 2003

Well, except maybe the PX forum, some of those death and destruction threads are good.

It might be a good idea to nail some of the longer game threads, even if they're still active. They can always be restarted if they're wanted badly enough, but it seems to me that no sane individual will go through (say) 900+ pages of word association. You may as well reclaim some space there.

I've been ToSeeked... by BA... about his post. 8-[

In that case, you can delete that thread I just started in BBA.

I was asking if you'd accept mercy pleas. Of course, I don't propose direct submission for each individual thread, but rather we discuss the threads we want saved, to make sure there is agreement that there is value in them and then submit them to you in one go to spare your inbox.

Well BA, what needs to be done needs to be done. Anything that will make Bad Astronomy and the BABB run fast is good by me!

*takes a look at post count*

...It's just a number. (just kidding!)

Anyways, I'd had a feeling that this was going to happen sooner or later.

if i remember the phpbb script correctly...
your post count will be fine, unless he hits the rebuild postcount btn
it would be way to resource intensive to check all the post of a persen and count them to displau the post count! so the number is kept in a seperate table that is updatre when you post.

(sure hope it is still correct, haven't use phpbb for... 2 years)

The only issue I can think of is when memory references a toseeked issue that can't be toseeked.

For newbies such as me there will be alot of issues that will come up where oldbies like you will no doubtedly need to reiterate instead of just toseeking them. Could tend to get on your nerves.

It will tend to kill some non-discussable issues as well which should be a good thing.

As for toseekability I don't know how that would work but I've read some very enlightening posts that will undoubtedly be lost. Too bad there isn't a way for a toseek master to zip and store the forums for future toseeking issues. If not in forum form then in a sorta toseek archive database that could be cut and paste to finalize toseek issues.

Warning: the current medications in my body may have misconstrued my intentions resulting in incomprehensibe babbling. #-o

I think the BA would have autopruning software(the board comes with one-but in that case bumping threads would help them)

My first post was in MoonHoax, between ToSeek and JayUtah  .
I'm looking up my first BABBling post...
Found it! 19th October 2004, about famous Belgians .

Hm October;I guess I won't get hurt too much by this first pruning. Just one week of posts gone 100 posts at most. Counted: only 4 posts if I understood everything well!!
phew. I feel like Alexandria's library never burnt down

I think you could dump the Word Association Game without any problems as well. As far as I can see it's just a way to bump peoples post counts.

Still, it might be a good idea to delete and restart it every so often.

As far as I can see, if it were used for just that purpose, it wouldn't have been going on for so long. It's because of the funny associations (which allow you to learn other aspects of posters), the side talk, and just the "now for something completely different" value that it has been going on for so long already.

Record number of using forms of "ToSeek" in a post? (That's using it in a comprehensible way--not just writing it over and over!)

For those who are interested in reading old posts after the database is trimmed, there appear to be pretty extensive records over at the Internet Archive WayBackMachine.

It worked OK for me. For example try this link which was accessed using the steps you used for 10/2004/BABBling/Word Association Game, then clicking on the last page listed (517).

The page that appeared had "Goto page Previous 1, 2, 3 ... 516, 517, 518 ... 929, 930, 931 Next" at the top, with the page 931 linked to copies of today's posts.

It appears that some parts are archived, others aren't.

    Where the URL begins with

the entire content appears to be archived.

But where the URL begins with

it links to the current board.

    It changed on me!

I copied this link, which has 20041009 (2004 Oct 9) in it, but when I pasted it in my browser, and hit return, it sent me to a link with 20050426 (2005 Apr 26) in it. It must be figuring out if there are new versions... or something.

Re: Pruning of BABBling this weekend

    Interesting.

BTW, for clarification, where I wrote

    Where the URL begins with

the entire content appears to be archived.

But where the URL begins with

it links to the current board.
The key factor appears to be the change from

    to
