SUMMARY: A team of engineers from the European Southern Observatory recently tested out a new adaptive optics facility on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. This technology adapts images taken by the telescope to remove the distortion caused by the Earth’s atmosphere – as if they were seen from space. The next step will be to connect similar systems to all the telescopes at the facility and then hook them up in a large array. This should allow the observatory to resolve objects 100 times fainter than today.
