A black lump that crashed into an Auckland family's living room has been identified as only the ninth meteorite to be found in New Zealand. (source: The Age)

Here's the CNN version of the same story
    NZ Meteorite
I was curious as to why they were advised to dry it out in their oven. I'd have thought that they should have wrapped it in aluminum foil and put it in their freezer. Putting it in their oven would further drive out any volitile atoms or molecules, making the object less scientifically valuable. Does anyone know why they were advised to bake it?

Maybe the volatile atoms and molecules the primordial essence stinks, and they have to bake it out.

I remember one of the astronauts who landed on the moon said that the rocks smelled like they had been burned, like spent gunpowder, a smell leftover from the impacts.

I would have thought that it would have good a decent baking already while entering our atmosphere.

Maybe it had to be returned to the New Zealand oven to prevent evil taking over middle earth.
