SUMMARY: Scientists have discovered that the currents in the Earth's oceans bear a striking resemblance to the bands of clouds in Jupiter's atmosphere. The clouds on Jupiter and the other gas giant planets form into bands which move in alternating directions from top to bottom. The similarity is more than coincidental, as both phenomena seem to be based on similar physical forces. This discovery could have implications in both climate research here on Earth, and the design of new space missions to explore the outer planets.

Yeah, it's interesting, but notice we're not talking about two cloud systems or two ocean current systems, we're talking about a cloud system and an ocean current system. They follow similar patterns, but are not the same physical systems.

Hmm. I can't wait for a big red hurricane to form somewhere over the Atlantic and remain intact for hundreds of years!
Of course similarities between the two planets are relative. This compariosn should yield some useful and interesting insights into what drives our own weather system, a topic which we honestly know little about.

I think that we could learn alot if we sent a prob to one of the moons of Jupiter or to the planet itself.

Um Nick, that was done already. The probe was called Galileo.
