Don't worry, I'm sure this thread will still be active in 10 years time, I promise I'll keep an eye on it.

New Horizons had a page to itself in the Metro today; a free tabloid you read on the London Underground. This is of absolutely no significance except that once a topic ends up in the Metro it's almost certainly mainstream.

Even though no official ephemerides for the probe has been released at this time, since only one possible orbit exists for launch on January 17, 2006 and Pluto arrival on July 14, 2015. So I did some calculations and simulations myself. New Horizons will travel really faster than I have thought before. The probe will make its flyby of Pluto at a speed of 13.78 kilometers per second, and around May 6, 2026, it will be farther away from Pluto than it was on December 17, 2005. The Jupiter gravitation slingshot will be on February 28, 2007.Originally Posted by The Supreme Canuck

I think its perfectly fair to call the Voyagers "interstellar" probes. Especially since they're going to be giving us perfectly good data on the interstellar medium in a year or two.Originally Posted by harlequin

As an extra hairsplit.... it depends on what you consider to be the edge of the solar system... the heliospause or the Oort cloud!
Cheers
I'd loveto get into that debate, but I'm afraid the KBO/Planet debaters have the duelling sabers all tied up at the moment. :POriginally Posted by badprof
Good call, though

With a bit of luck that distance will be drastically reduced when the New Horizons probe gets into space in a few weeks time!!!Originally Posted by yaohua2000

Edit: You are right. I've done some calculations and New Horizons's range-rate with respect to Pluto will be about 23.696 kilometers per second on January 21 after launch, while the Earth will be 16.264 kilometers per second.

I guess they really did put that disk with names on it, on the spacecraft. I was #400.

Ms. Emily reports:
I'll just make this an "all New Horizons" morning. The latest Expendable Launch Vehicle Status Report from Kennedy Space Center has some good news for New Horizons:
The borescope inspection of the Atlas V RP-1 propellant tank was successfully completed this week, and no defects were observed. The results of the inspection serve to increase confidence in launch success, but further testing and modeling of the vehicle continues in order to provide confidence in proceeding to launch.
This is important news because problems were found in a different Atlas V late last year that prompted the inspection of New Horizons' launch vehicle. The fact that "no defects were observed" removes one more hurdle before New Horizons' launch.
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.
New Horizons was 4779000000 kilometers away from Pluto at 2006-01-09 09:12:42 UTC.
