    Now kiddies, we had a really good time at Jupiter, so let's not start spoiling the trip. If we have time, we'll take a pit stop at Neptune; maybe get some shots of the Trojans. Won't that be fun?

    Kids, we all remember what happened to that Huygens fellow when he acted like that. Now we wouldn't want to have to leave you two behind on some distant moon, would we?

    Does anyone know if NH has taken any pics of Pluto since the ones from last fall? I know we have a long way to go til the pics start looking like more than a pixel or two, but it would be sort of nice to see a snapshot every year or so to see how Pluto slowly grows as NH gets closer.

    New Horizons has passed another distance marker. Yaohua will probably have the details.

    The probe is now less than 3700 million miles from Pluto.

    New Horizons is no more than 3.7 billion kilometers away from 134340 Pluto.

    New Horizons was exactly 3,700,000,000 kilometers away from 134340 Pluto at 2007-07-19 04:48:53 UTC.

    * Range: 3,700,000,000 km
    * Range-rate: -18.546165 km/s
    * Velocity: 18.555820 km/s

    This just in. . .New Horizons is now 3,600,000,000 kilometers away from Pluto.

    Slowly, but surely, that number is getting smaller and smaller. . .

    Hey, my name is New Horizions. I don't have the golden bling of my older sisters, but I'm faster and took clearer pictures of Jupiter than they ever did. Plus, they haven't sent back a pic since, like, '90. I'm blazing a new trail, going where no one has gone before, and when I get to Pluto, I'm going to steal those headlines out from under you, Paris!

    Planetary Society Weblog: New Horizons now aimed directly at Pluto

    This afternoon Alan Stern posted to unmannedspaceflight.com that New Horizons has successfully completed the trajectory correction maneuver that lines the spacecraft up for its July 14, 2015 encounter with Pluto. This is the first firing of the thrusters since before the encounter with Jupiter, and it is also the last such maneuver that it will perform before it has to re-target to a Kuiper belt object.

    I think this thread should be merged with the Progress... thread. No point in posting the same news on different threads.

    We had a discussion about that earlier. I use the Progress. . . thread to count off the orbits as we pass them. It will be another six weeks before NH crosses the orbit of a named object.

    BTW, New Horizons is NOT aimed directly at Pluto! It's aimed at a point that Pluto will pass in about 8 years.

    In eight years, when NH reaches Pluto, will this thread have over 8000 posts?

    It won't.

    However, there's a high probability that New Horizons could visit two KBOs after the Pluto flyby. IIRC the probability New Horizons could visit three KBOs is less than 10%. So, if the probe is especially lucky it will be busy long after the Pluto flyby.

    Wikipedia: New Horizons

    Neptune Trojans
    New Horizons' trajectory to Pluto passes near Neptune's trailing Lagrange point ("L5"). A number of "Trojan asteroids" have been discovered in these regions recently, although it is not yet known if New Horizons will pass close to any. If any asteroids are found to be close enough to be studied, observations will be planned. Unfortunately, the Lagrange point comes shortly before the Pluto encounter. Depending on where the asteroid is along the spacecraft trajectory, New Horizons may not have significant downlink bandwidth, and thus free memory, for Trojan data.

    The distance to Pluto dropped below 3,500,000,000 miles a few minutes ago
