1. ## Sun Ring?

I remember reading something about this the other day but can't seem to find it in a search. My mom was just sitting outside when she looked up (sunglasses on) and saw this ring around the sun. She yelled for me to come outside and look at it. Well, I looked at it sort of and then went inside to break out my welders goggles. It looks to be about 33MM across when a ruler is held at arms length. The edge of the ring looks like clouds sort of.

It seems like something that I know but can not remember. Thanks. -Colt

2. Did it look like this? If so, it was probably one of these.

3. All you need to know about parhelia, sundogs, haloes. rainbows-

4. Yep, looked like those except it happened at 2PM with full sun. Thanks guys. -Colt

5. It was most likely a halo like they're saying. I've seen one from the moon when it was well above the horizon. I don't know much about welder's goggles, but are they polarized? You mother's sunglasses likely are if she saw this clearly. Scattered light is usually polarized, so a halo might would probably show up better through a polarizer (goggle/shades).

How big is the Sun when you hold the ruler at arm's length? If that is the 22 degree halo, then the Sun (a half degree) would be less than a millimeter, which seems kinda small at arm's length.

Hmm, good point. Wonder if Colt meant 33cm.

Last time I saw the "sun dog" phenomenon was on a flight to Seattle, saw 'em at cruising altitude. It was a pretty cool sight.
