A brass monkey used to be a dedicated square bracket which was fastened to a ship's gun deck,
the purpose of which was to contain a pile of cannon balls. Brass wouldn't rust. But it contracted a little more than the perimeter cannon balls on the bottom tier , and thus...would pop out a cannon ball if the temperature would get too cold, hence the phrase ........
"Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" . The Navy is rich with traditions.
And a Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Ok, it's cold. 13 F/-11 C. The lack of wind makes it bearable.

Today is another lovely balmy day with blue skies. Minimum around 18 C (64 F) to a maximum, so far, of 33 C (91 F). Just off for a, slow, bike ride around the river.
I'm sitting up at the computer in the wee hours of the morning because I ate unwisely and have heartburn. Ugh.

22°F , a fine dusting of snow which may be tapering off. Wind calm.
Very cold and dry conditions continue here, the ground now feels like concrete under foot, cannot squash the mole run/hills.
We've just returned from a two-day trip to Portland. Absolutely dismal going down, not much better yesterday, but a bit better today.

Not warm, probably about 20oF or 265 K, and a bit windy. Not a good day for walking my short-haired dog.
When gets around negative K then worry.

Definitely a indoors rent a movie day on tv (Dunkirk), only going outside once to get the newspaper, refresh the hen's water and make sure my homemade water warmer is working ok. Woke up to 9F, expecting a high of 27F. Weds looks to be the only day above freezing here for the week.
10° F. It's a heat wave.
9° F. Ferocious is suing at the front door to come in. He went out 4 minutes ago. Maybe he's smarter than we think![]()
About -11 C clear and sunny, happy no frozen pipes in over 24 hours. (it is not just ours that freezing around here. )

Decades ago we lived in a mobile home with PVC plastic piping. During one unusually cold winter (for South Carolina), my main water pipe froze.
I just sawed off the frozen part at both ends and spliced in a new section. Once the glue had dried, I opened the valve and all was well.
Then I buried the pipe deeper so it wouldn't happen again.
We have blizzard conditions. It took an hour to get home from work.

This storm is unsettling. My new house is not yet battle proven so I don't know how well it will hold up.
We've had sunshine every day this year!

It warmed up to -14C today! For the last two weeks it has typically gone to between -20C and -30C overnight, and the lowest was -33C on Christmas morning.
I finally found the right combination of clothing to wear when I go for a walk in these temperatures. When it's not windy out, it is possible to overdress if the walk is long and energetic.
I was going to go to Victoria for Christmas this year, having both my son and two sisters living there, but I had a change of plans when it turned out one of my daughters would be staying in the north this year because of work scheduling. More generally, I haven't considered it. I prefer the snow and cold to the rain, and while some like to go somewhere tropical for the winter, that doesn't appeal to me at all (unless it's something like a trip to the Galapagos Islands with like-minded science geeks). I've found ways to stay happily busy here in retirement. The biggest challenge is to avoid becoming too sedentary during the winter.
