7.7 quake off Tonga spurs tsunami warning

    On CNN

"There's a tsunami in the water, but it's not gonna do much," said Robert Cessaro, a geophysicist with the center, citing data from a deep-ocean gauge.

I agree with Argos! In picture number nine it looks like they are Too Darn Close.

What are the odds of that stage of the eruption hurling lava bombs?

Picture number 4 looks like a giant creature coming up to the island.

    FYI...

I was able to see the plume from the Volcano live on the Fiji webcam yesterday. It looks quiet today, although it is not that great of a shot.

The Suva cam at FijiCam pans past the island you see in #3 of the pictures posted above.

Thanks for this pictures, they are quite informative. The volcano is forming a small island there. When the pictures are taken, the crater has formed. But it is still being infiltrated by water it seems. Based on the explosions seen in the picture.

I am unsure if this is a ash type of eruption or lava type of eruption. As I am not sure what type of volcano this is.

    f'taghn!

But I thought R'lyeh was supposed to lie beneath 47°9′S 126°43′W in the southern Pacific Ocean? Either way...

I believe this is the first time I've even seen an underwater eruption above the waves before. Pretty neat.

I'm going to save a copy of the video clip.

Ever since I learned the guest character on Gilligan's Island was named after the archipelago, I've wanted to go there. Then I learned the truth behind their moniker, The Friendly Islands had to do with the fact that their chief's, gathered for the 'inasi festival, couldn't agree on a plan as to how to kill Captain Cook in 1773.

If they had, the islands wouldn't have seemd so friendly. They're beautiful islands, though. Just keep your knees covered...
