I'm the first finalist listed. 8)
Quick rant: I still think naming the telescope after Carl Sagan would've been better then Spitzer. No offense to Spitzer, he was a really great guy, but I think the public would be more interested in the telescope etc. if they knew who it was named after.
And I did find it semi-interesting that the guy who literally picked the winning name over mine used to have a very good relationship with Spitzer before he died (worked under him etc).

Sagan has already had the Mars Pathfinder landing site named for him ("Sagan Memorial Station"). Spitzer was due.

(Proponents of what became Hubble originally called it the "Large Space Telescope," or LST, which many of them liked because you could also say that it stood for "Lyman Spitzer Telescope," appropriate since Spitzer was the first proponent of the concept.)
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.

    Good show!

I too had submitted, but obviously my essay wasn't worth noting.

(For the curious, I was one of the geeks who submitted Gene Roddenberry's name. 8-[ )

They really are. It was on the front page of the newspaper I get here too. Absolutely beautiful. Gotta love astronomy.

M81 makes a great desktop (it had to fight it out with a colleague's fantastic photo of a spotted owl).

    And good show, Androm.

You can find yourself in a dilemma, since there's nothing wrong and a lot right with the Spitzer nomen. I guess no one said the contest was based on popularity.

Yes. Congrats here also to you, Androm.

I am surprised "Red Eye" barely won in popularity over your candidate. I suppose the voters aren't that big in whiskey and late nite flying.
